Give yourself a Stargell Star for capturing this sweet game-used Pittsburgh Pirates cap. In celebration of the National League's 100th Anniversary, senior circuit squads donned pillbox style hats. Obviously the Pirates and their fans dug these retro lids, and the Pittsburghers continued wearing them in games though the mid-1980s. Securely affixed with a "New Era Pro Model" label on the interior sweatband, this size 7-1/2" cap is attributed to Hall of Famer Willie Stargell, who retired in 1982. This gold hat is accented with a black bill, black piping around the gold dome and a team logo letter "P" patch at front. Consistent with known examples from the period, the inside mesh liner is written with Roman numeral "VIII", also consistent with Stargell gamers. Displaying a nice shape, this iconic head topper shows ample signs of authentic game use, but retains an excellent level of integrity with a generally clean surface. Photo matches of "Pops" wearing this type of hat are abundant, including his 1982 Donruss baseball card and the dust jacket of his 1984 autobiography book co-authored with Tom Bird. Hats off to the winner of this classic baseball relic.
