You can go far over the rainbow, deep down the rabbit hole and merrily through the woods to grandma's house, and you will still not likely see one of these. From the land of the obscure but fascinating, comes this 1943 Philadelphia Athletics All-Star Game fountain pen desk set. This dynamic desk decorator is styled with a brass A's elephant mascot statue on a green onyx base. The elephant spans 5-1/4" from tusk to tail and stands 3-1/2" high. The translucent natural stone base is engraved on the top with gold gilt lettering that reads "11th Annual All Star Game Shibe Park Phila. 1943". Also protruding from the top of the base, is a rotating screw nub that supported the now absent pen holder tube. The accompanying 8" long fountain pen is marked "W.A. Sheaffer Pen Co., Fort Madison, Iowa, U.S.A., Made in U.S.A.". The elephant statue shows moderate wear on the tusks, while the brass body reports in excellent shape. The elegant green onyx shows light wear and the gold lettering remains bold. The pen shows moderate wear and the brass fill lever is intact. It's hard to imagine that frugal team owner-manager Connie Mack gave away many of these and they were likely reserved for high level VIPs rather than mere ballplayers. Make a determined charge for this ultra-rare big game souvenir.
