Years of service in a prominent baseball position will certainly earn you plenty of accolades. In recognition of John Heydler's contributions to the game, artist Lank Leonard (d.1970) created this dignified drawing for "The Sun" newspaper of New York City. The caption at the bottom of this 8x10 piece of original artwork reads in full "John Arnold Heydler, For seventeen years the President of the National League ...retiring today because of failing health issues after forty years in baseball!!". Artist Leonard has signed ("9-10") at left and Heydler has added a lengthy inscription at right that reads "Original artwork of "Sun" article Dec. 11, 1934, presented to me by Mr. Leonard at press dinner to me, Jan. 7, 1935, Hotel New York, NYC". Heydler's penmanship shows firm ("9") quality throughout the written passage and this crisp, clean artwork panel presents as (NM+). Reported as coming from the Heydler family archive, this vintage piece is a fine tribute to one of baseball's valued contributors.
