One of the great antique tobacco card issues is spotlighted with this 1888 N43 Allen & Ginter "World Champions Second Series" lot of (21). Formatted in a double-wide size of 3-1/4 x 3", these ancient multi-sport cardboard treasures are much bigger than standard size tobacco cards of the period. The obverse illustrations are glorious presentations that take after the albums Allen & Ginter produced during the time to coincide with the standard issue N28 and N29 Champions cards. Amounting to a starting set of (21/50), the obverses of these generally solid examples present VG to EX details, however they are all affected by minor to moderate traces of adhesive and paper residue on the reverses. (11) of the cards have just small dots of adhesive staining and a couple have minor writing on the reverse as well and the other (10) have considerable sections of album paper on the back, though overall this group is attractive and better than average examples of this age. Highlights are pugilists Patsey Kerrigan, Jack Havlin; wrestler Theobaud Bauer; tennis players Dr. James Dwight and H.W. Slocumb Jr.; and all-around athlete M.W. Ford.
