Known primarily for his work on horror comic book titles Swamp Thing, House of Mystery and many others, artist Berni Wrightson (d.2017) took a stab at Conan the Barbarian in the early 1970s. Proof comes forward with this c.1970 original artwork sample page featuring our favorite Cimmerian. This 11-1/2 x 17" sheet sees Conan battling a pointy-eared demon with determined ferocity in a series of four panels. Wrightson has signed at bottom in bold fashion and the page is numbered "62" to the left of his ("9-10") strength signature. While the impressive image area remains clean and distinct, the perimeter shows moderate wear and staining. The reverse bears several tape stains and a handwritten notation at top reads "Sample Page for Marvel's Conan, Circa 1970, $150". Though the identity of the writer who has filled in the word balloons on the obverse is unknown, Roy Thomas is known to have been the sole writer for the first 115 issues of Marvel's Conan the Barbarian series, which were published from 1970 through 1980. This piece comes to us directly from a consignor who worked as an editor for Marvel in the 1970s.
