Be first in line for this pairing of the first two issues of Sports Illustrated magazine. Published in 1954, these seminal issues were the seeds for what has blossomed into the most popular sports publication ever.
The inaugural 8/16/54 issue is obviously prized for being the first in the sixty-six year Sports Illustrated run, but it is also desired for the front cover featuring Eddie Mathews fairly early in his career and for a three page foldout of 1954 Topps paper baseball cards, that includes legends Rich Ashburn, Larry Doby, Gil Hodges, Eddie Mathews, Willie Mays, Jackie Robinson, Duke Snider and Ted Williams. The #1 issue offered here is a solid example that presents handsomely, however several stress cracks along the spine limit its grade to (EX) and the Topps sheet has been folded in reverse order with the middle page affected by an added fold on the right edge.
Dated 8/23/54, the follow-up edition is another classic. This second issue is also prized for a Topps paper baseball card foldout. In this case all of the cards are of New York Yankees players, including several examples that are in black and white to signify they are phantom examples that were not part of Topps regular baseball card set for 1954. Chief among these is a highly coveted Mickey Mantle card. Seen in color are Hall of Famers Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford and Phil Rizzuto. With deference to an original period address label affixed to the front cover, the #2 issue in this offering is also a solid (EX) example.
