Slugging baseballs on a regular basis is only possible if you have a consistent batting stroke. Batting behind Babe Ruth for much of his career, Lou Gehrig was a model of consistency in churning out astounding power numbers at the plate. Gehrig is pictured in his final spring training, striving to keep his cut sharp in this 7x9 Acme news photo. Stamp dated 3/7/39 on the reverse, this classic image of "The Iron Horse" following through on his swing was taken just months before he retired due to illness. Though he still looks good in this photo, Gehrig's skills and stamina were markedly lessened by the time this photo was taken at Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg, FL and sadly he removed himself from the Yankees lineup on 5/2/39. A couple of small edge tears are noted on the border and some moderate rippling spans the bottom edge. Otherwise this original period photo shows appealing (GD-VG) quality. Affixed to the reverse is a caption sheet dated 3/1/39.
