Not long after Babe Ruth had caught flak for off-season barnstorming, so too did the 1925 Pottsville Maroons, whose league-best record earned them the NFL championship title...until it was stripped away. Pottsville's crime? Playing an exhibition game against Notre Dame all-stars in Philadelphia, where the Frankford Yellow Jackets alone ostensibly held territorial rights. Still to this day, the runner-up Chicago Cardinals are deemed official NFL champions for that year. And so the Maroons' mystique continues, manifested in high auction values such as the $3,500 once paid for a panoramic team photo similar to the one on offer here. Taken by Wonders Photo Studio of Pottsville, the original team-issued panorama measures 5-1/2" x 14-1/4" and proudly heralds that controversial victory over the Fightin' Irish—described here as the "Four Horsemen and Seven Mules" in the "'First All-Star Game Played in This Country." Condition is technically GD/VG with a handful of vertical creases, but overall display quality is quite nicer with a glossy surface, bold print and fine image clarity/contrast.
