Dayton got its gridiron start in the 1910s and was named after its Triangle Park home field. But an over-reliance on local players led to disappointing results and a lack of fans to fill the stadium, so the Triangles became a "traveling team" that usually played on the road. On October 23, 1927, they suffered a 7-0 defeat in Providence.
