Born free, Jonathan Clarkson Gibbs (1821-1874) rose through the ranks of Philadelphia society to become an influential minister and abolitionist, then moved south to Florida where he was perhaps the most important black officeholder and served as Secretary of State—as seen here. The 8x10 document features dark-ink "9" script, rates VG-EX with toning, and is housed in a 14x17 ornate gold frame. Full LOA from JSA.
