Recall the roar of the crowd as elite thoroughbred horses thunder down the stretch, with this 1944 Preakness horse race negative lot of (24). These rousing images are the work of Nate Fine, who was renowned for fifty years of service as the official photographer for the team formerly known as the Washington Redskins. Here we reap the benefits of Fine's short jaunt north to Baltimore's Pimlico Race Course, for the 1944 running of the Preakness. Among the various scenes are shots of the leaders as they approach the wire, including winner "Pensive", who is also pictured in the "Winner's Circle". Also featured are second and third place finishers "Platter" and "Stir Up", plus several images of the crowd and other horses. Half of these vintage negatives are clean and sharp, including "Pensive" at the wire; while the other half are either slightly to moderately duller or are lightly to moderately affected by a white dust coating. Despite these conditions, all images remain discernible, and those in the know should be able to successfully clean the half dozen coated with dust.
