If you've ever wondered about terms such as "newspaper syndicate" and "boiler-plate press", the answers lie here. Offered is a 1911 Western Newspaper Union "Newspaper Plate Service" catalog. The largest newspaper content supplier of the day, WNU serviced thousands of local newspaper editors with pre-printed features at little to no cost, with the company's profits coming largely from advertisers. This large book contains a wide array of "Patent Insides" page examples, which would be sent on demand to local papers pre-printed on one side and blank on the other, so the local entity could print its particular content. A wide array of features are presented, including fiction, product advertising, comic strips, humor, religion, sports and even some actual news. This volume features several pages with baseball content, including illustrations of period greats Hughie Jennings, Johnny Evers, Addie Joss and Ed Walsh, plus an article by Cap Anson. Condition of this massive 15x22 softcover book is fairly pleasing, given its age of 110. Moderate cover wear and tears on the spine where the now detached cover was connected by staples are noted, while the interior pages are generally clean and supple with bold text and graphics.
