Bud Melman. Rupert Jee. Dave's Mom. Kenny Sheehan. All got their 15 minutes of fame—and then some!—through seemingly random cameos with David Letterman. Sheehan, a Late Show stagehand known for his stoicism and dangling cigarette, would come on air with crew colleague Pat Farmer to read Oprah Winfrey interview transcripts. Other Sheehan bits included "Stagehand Stories," "Stagehand Fantasies," "CBS Mailbag," and "Pat and Kenny Boxing." He was even an extra on Spin City, Cosby, Guiding Light and The People's Court. There are many YouTube video clips of, and references to, Sheehan's Letterman appearances. And his cult status landed him the #7 slot on Rolling Stone's Top 10 Letterman Sidekicks list. Now we're pleased to present Kenny Sheehan's personal collection of Late Show staff swag and mementos, including clothes, bags, scripts, VIP passes, staff photos, even cue cards.
Not only are these real cue cards used on the Late Show, and not only are they from the historic last Late Show episode, but they also include the very first and second jokes from Letterman's monologue when he initially took the stage after his long standing ovation! As you can read here or watch here, the lead joke was about not getting the Tonight Show, and the next one focused on post-show plans of heading up Scientology. Other jokes mentioned here either in the black cue-card lines or the red writer notes below revolve around the (self-deprecatingly small) amount of laughter in 6,000-plus shows; the need to be a guest on someone else's late-night show; and whether Letterman's son thinks he's going to prison! The cards measure 14x22 and are in EX condition.
IT'S NOT LOOKING GOOD FOR ME GETTING - TONIGHT SHOW... (writer notes describe son saying, "Why does Daddy have to go to prison")
NOW THAT - SHOW - OVER I CAN FOCUS ON BEING - FACE - SCIENTOLOGY
WE'VE DONE 6028 SHOWS - THAT'S ABOUT 15 MINUTES - LAUGHS (writer notes mention Stephen Hawking)
FROM NOW ON, IF I SCREW UP, I'LL HAVE TO GO ON SOMEONE ELSE'S SHOW TO APOLOGIZE...
MY SON - IN AUD. TONIGHT - HE'S NOT CLEAR ON WHAT'S GOING ON
Also, there are two partially written cards mentioning bandleader sidekick Paul Shaffer.
