Description

A fine example of Stan Laurel's exceedingly gracious rapport with his fans arrives, with this typed letter signed and accompanying ephemera. A remarkable comedic talent and true gift to cinema, Laurel (d.1965) is best remembered for his numerous films and stage show performances with his longtime partner Oliver Hardy. Following Hardy's demise in 1957, Laurel turned down any new work and spent his waning days at an apartment hotel in Santa Monica. Dated 11/24/58, the offered letter comes from this post-Hardy period and it is typed on "Stan Laurel, 849 Ocean Avenue, Santa Monica, Calif." letterhead.

This crisp, clean page has several original period compacting folds and one pinhole, and remains very attractive with distinct text. The content expresses Laurel's appreciation for a fan's interest, along with comments about the length of his and Hardy's careers, number of films, his retirement and his relocation from Malibu to Santa Monica. Laurel's precisely executed signature sows ("9") strength and is boldly underscored.

A postscript mentions a Laurel & Hardy photograph, which is included in this offering. Measuring 5-1/2 x 3-1/2", this sharp photo shows minor wear and is preprinted with L&H facsimile signatures. Laurel has penned the salutation "All The Best Dick!" at center. Accompanying are (2) envelopes addressed to the same fan, both postmarked 11/25/58 and both printed with Laurel's return address. Also present is a 2/24/65 Chicago Sun-Times newspaper clipping of Laurel's obituary. Auction LOA from JSA for the TLS.
