The greatest forgotten pitcher of all time? For one brief shining moment, "Colby Jack" Coombs was superior to Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson or anyone else. He posted a 31-9 record for the 1910 A's with an infinitesimal 1.30 ERA, an astounding 13 shutouts (still ranked second best in history), and a then-record 53 consecutive scoreless innings. Plus 3 complete-game wins in the World Series! Not to mention that he captured a second A.L. pitching crown the following year with a league-leading 28 wins. After his playing career ended, Coombs managed the 1919 Phillies for a grand total of 63 games before being replaced by Gavvy Cravath. Clearly, his tenure made a deep impression on the team, who were sad to see him go and presented Coombs with this sterling-silver-plated trophy cup. The century-old showpiece stands 12" tall and is engraved, "Presented to / JOHN W. COOMBS / By the Members / of / THE PHILLIES / 1919." Typical surface patina and general handling wear throughout. Displays beautifully nonetheless. A museum-worthy relic!
