For many, America was a happy place during the administration of President John F. Kennedy. After he was cut down by an assassin's bullet in November of 1963, a prolonged period of national mourning ensued. The U.S. Mint did its part to ease the pain, with a swift re-design of the half dollar in January of 1964, featuring a JFK bust on the obverse, and a modified presidential seal on the reverse.
