The NBA community lost one of its greatest players and ambassadors when Bob Lanier died earlier this year at age 73. Commissioner Adam Silver memorialized Lanier this way, "For more than 30 years, Bob served as our global ambassador and as a special assistant to David Stern and then me, traveling the world to teach the game's values and make a positive impact on young people everywhere. It was a labor of love for Bob, who was one of the kindest and most genuine people I have ever been around." The Class of 1992 Hall of Famer dominated in the paint, averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds over his 14-season career. He was also known for literally having big shoes to fill, and his bronzed size-18 sneakers (some claimed size 22) were displayed at Springfield even before his enshrinement. This sole example of Lanier's classic Converse All-Star Chuck Taylors shows solid game wear throughout and features a light inscription and signature on the instep side, "Alvin / You're #1 / God Bless!! / Bob Lanier / #16 / HOF 92."
