Description

“To play on a team that wins the World Series is the biggest thrill you could have in baseball,” Gene Alley said of the 1971 Pirates championship. “I don’t think anything could compare to it. Somebody can hit 50 home runs in a year—which is something I didn’t do or even came close to. I don’t know what that feels like. But, I can’t imagine it being better than winning everything.” Oft-overlooked today, the Bucs' longtime shortstop was a 2-time All Star and 2-time Gold Glove winner. His American Baseball Company vented helmet (size 7) hails from circa 1966, when Alley ranked 11th in MVP voting. It shows excellent use with scuffs, scratches and dings. The foam-padded handband is intact, while the crown pad is missing. Alley's number "14" is notated in black marker over the number "26" (worn by Elroy Face) on the size tag. Full LOA from J.T. Sports. Additional handwritten LOA from consignor reads, "In 1990 I bought a collection of game used equipment. The collection originated from Livingston, New Jersey collector icon Barry Halper."
