With all due respect to the so-called Myth of Doubleday, it's the man's distinguished military career that should take precedence over his dubious invention of baseball. Here, one year after he fought in the Battle of Gettysburg and attended Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, Major General Doubleday is stationed in Washington D.C. when he writes and signs this recommendation letter. It measures approximately 7x9 and is mounted to a felt/cardboard matte. The text reads, "Although not...acquainted with Col. Charles H. Darling, from what I have seen of him and from the recommendations of those in whom I have great confidence I have no hesitation in recommending him for the position of Master Genl of the State of New York." VG condition with an "8"-strength signature. Full LOA from JSA.
