Poor Tony C. He had as much natural potential as anyone in baseball, but that infamous 1967 injury—getting beaned in the face before batting helmets had protective earflaps—changed his life and derailed his promising career. Conigliaro was never the same afterward. The slugger who had begun his career with a homer at age 19 in his first at-bat was essentially out of baseball by age 26. The 1980s brought a heart attack, stroke and coma. Conig died at 45 in 1990. This unofficial Spalding "Home Run League" ball displays a black-ink "7" personalized signature across the sweet spot and east panel. The surface is mostly creamy toned, except for dark scuffing on the north panel. Auction LOA from JSA.
