After his illustrious career ended, Robinson turned to writing and acting. His autobiography features a Leroy Neiman portrait on the dust jacket cover and a personalized "9"-strength signature on the first flyleaf. Here's how the jacket bio heralds him: "Called by a majority of experts 'pound for pound' the best boxer ever to enter a ring, Sugar Ray Robinson is surely one of the most glamorous figures of our time. But what of the other Robinson? The kid who is terrified of elevators. The young GI who, together with Joe Louis, did what he could in the early 1940s to combat racial discrimination. The postwar champion who refused one million dollars to dump the Graziano fight. The boxer who dreamed one night that he would kill his opponent in the ring—and did, the following night." Exposure to moisture has stained the top and bottom edges of the book, in no way affecting the signature and inscription. Auction LOA from JSA.
