Racing around behind the wheel of the gadget-laden Mach 5 race car, Speed presented audiences with a fascinating action-adventure alternative to the familiar comedic fare of anthropomorphic animals, squinty-eyed sailors and friendly ghosts, who had ruled screens big and small ever since Mickey Mouse steamed up the animation river in 1928.
