From the moment it opened, Forbes Field served as a palace of baseball thrills for Pittsburgh natives. Built in 1909, the venerable stadium hosted the World Series in its very first season of service, with the Pirates clinching at home over Ty Cobb and the Detroit Tigers on 10/16/1909. Yinzers take delight in this 1909 panorama photo of the first ever baseball game played at Forbes Field. Sized to majestic proportions of 41 x 15-1/2" and adhered to a backer board, this antique photo shows considerable wear which results in period authentic appeal. Printed at top is the Headline "Initial Game on Forbes Field - The Largest and Finest Ball Grounds in the World - Pittsburgh vs. Chicago, June 30, 1909". Subtitles appearing below the headline are "Supplement to the Index - Pittsburgh's Illustrated Weekly, July 3, 1909" and the score of the game in question "Chicago 3 - Pittsburgh 2". At center is a generously sized photo of the field and stands, however for baseball memorabilia collectors, the most interesting feature is a series of oval player portrait photos at bottom that include Honus Wagner in the same pose used for his famous T206 tobacco card, wait...what. That's right, here we have an original period 1909 Wagner photo that is the same used on the most famous and valuable baseball card in history. Though tears, tape repairs, staining and a bit of surface loss over the Leach player photo are noted, the Wagner photo remains one of the brightest spots on this expansive publication supplement and makes a great prize for T206 collectors.
