Vying for a seventh straight season of 90-plus triumphs, the 1947 St. Louis Cardinals got off to a horrid 8-18 start before righting the ship and surging toward the front-running Brooklyn Dodgers. As the Redbirds climbed to within five games in early September, these (2) “phantom” World Series program cover proofs were designed in the hopes of another pennant. Each thick-stock item measures 9x12” and features a globe motif and “WORLD SERIES 1947” with a “Sportsmans Park” pennant and “25c” asking price. One features a lime-green background, while the other is blue. Both list the New York Yankees as the opponent. The latter detail was a sure thing as the Bronx Bombers entered July in first place and went 24-6 for the month to distance themselves from the Junior Circuit also-rans. Both present nicely with minor horizontal folds.
