Overshadowed by popular Motown teammates, former third baseman Don Wert quietly gained recognition as a defensive wizard at the hot corner, garnering “Mr. Tiger” accolades in 1965 and making his first All-Star Game appearance in 1968. Wert’s fondest diamond recollection, however, is the 1968 World Series endeavor that saw the Tigers overcome a three games-to-one deficit to overtake the defending champion Cardinals. This Hillerich & Bradsby bat was issued to Wert for use in that fall Classic. The uncracked white ash “M110” (31.6-oz/34-1/2”) signature model weapon features “1968 – WORLD SERIES” and “DETROIT TIGERS” barrel stampings, as well as a center brand that dates to the referenced labeling period. It was Wert who propelled the Tigers into the World Series that year, as his two-out 9th-inning single on September 17 sealed a pennant-clinching triumph that eliminated the Orioles. While Wert made 23 plate appearances in six games during the ’68 World Series, this particular bat shows no use, as Wert was partial to Adirondack models.
