Moderate age appropriate wear does not diminish Jefferson’s mighty endorsement, which reports desirable (“8-9”) potency from its placement at top left. Brevet Colonel Return J. Meigs, Jr. fought in the Northwest Territory Indian Wars and held political office as an Ohio senator and governor prior to his appointment by President James Madison to the position of U.S. Postmaster General. The offered document is further addressed as “Post master Genl, Washington” indicating it originated during the period 1814-1823 which was the span of Meigs' service as Postmaster. Light soiling and a 2” vertical tear which contacts the letter “s” at the end of the name “Meigs” do not affect Jefferson’s signature, which fortunately resides in the cleanest quadrant of this important historical relic.
