Bold in his choice to join the upstart AFL rather than the established NFL, Joe Namath was dubbed “Broadway Joe” (by teammate Sherman Plunkett) before he ever took a snap, let alone, guaranteed victory against an 18-point favorite in the Super Bowl. Encapsulated and assessed “Authentic” by PSA, this ticket stub was issued at Shea Stadium on September 18, 1965 as the outspoken Alabama product made his auspicious debut. One of five at its tier with only three graded higher, this Queens voucher is a rare memento from the origin of one of the most colorful careers in gridiron history. Idle in the previous week’s season opener at Houston, Namath was summoned to replace Mike Taliaferro, who was 8-for-33 through two games. Namath hit pay dirt quickly, connecting with teammate Don Maynard for a 37-yard touchdown. The rest, of course, is football history. This scarce keepsake features printed seating/event details and the facsimile signature of Gotham Football Club owner David “Sonny” Werblin.
