In the 50th anniversary year of his not inventing baseball, Brevet Major General Abner Doubleday penned this letter to President Grover Cleveland"s private secretary at the Executive Mansion. Doubleday"s mission? To run Washington"s U.S. Soldiers" Home—a residence facility for veterans. He writes, "I had the honor a few days since to apply for the position of Governor of the Soldier Home in Washington. I could secure by correspondence a great deal of outside influence but prefer to forward herewith a brief official abstract of my military record. It includes service in the Mexican War, the War of the Rebellion and during Indian hostilities in Florida and Texas." All of the handwriting and signature rate "8-9", while the letter"s 4-1/4" x 7-1/2" visible area displays apparent EX-MT condition with fold lines. Matted and framed to measure 9-3/4" x 12-3/4", with vintage provenance on the reverse referring to Doubleday"s accompanying service abstract that is no longer present here. Full LOA from JSA.
