Like his Phillies teammate Lou Chiozza (whose corresponding portrait is offered adjacently), Ethan Allen also played in major-league baseball"s historic first night game. "The lights were so bright, it was almost like a day game, except you could see your shadow on all sides of you," Allen said. "I remember that very well, looking at those shadows.” He was a lifetime .300 hitter who went on to author over a dozen published books about baseball fundamentals, as well as produce and direct movies for the National League Film Bureau. This original card artwork from the Diamond Stars set measures 4-1/4" x 5-1/4" and is gorgeously rendered with minute details like the scoreboard clock, telephone wires and Olde English-style Phillies "P" logo. The card itself and a black-marker, "9"-strength cut signature also appear in the weathered 9" x 10-1/2" frame. All three pieces bear some peripheral age wear/foxing/toning, with a speck of some kind on the forehead area of the artwork, and heavy vertical creasing on the card. Auction LOA from JSA.
