This ancient relic is from the game Roger Maris hit his historic 61st home run of the season, to break the single-season record of the immortal "Babe" Ruth. Maris deserved much better than he got in his pursuit of Ruth. A Spartan-like ballplayer, Maris was vilified, threatened with an asterisk, and even hated by some as he closed in on the record, with death threats requiring police protection. A relatively small crowd of 23,154 fans were on hand to witness Maris' record 61st blast, which came off Tracy Stallard at Yankee Stadium, in the last game of the 1961 season.
